Chapter Twelve

Tierney groaned as Brendan drove slowly up the street toward her apartment. “Oh, God, the inquisition is about to begin.”

On the wide veranda sat Megan, Holly, and Samantha—her new sisters-in-law.

Bren peered through the windshield. “All three of them, and yikes! No kids. Is that a good sign or a bad omen?”

Tee bit her bottom lip. “It means they’re here to talk and I’m not going to get out of it.”

He parked a couple of spaces away from the old Victorian. “Okay. Let’s go face the firing squad.”

It was kind of him to offer, but this was her little red wagon and she intended to pull it. Over lunch, they’d discussed going to see Frank and Teresa together. However, Tierney had nixed that idea, just as she was going to turn down his offer to stay to face her friends. She wanted to deal with her parents alone before she brought Bren into the picture. She knew, in spite of her dad’s reaction the day before, they would be unwilling to open up in front of Brendan. He’d agreed reluctantly, and when they’d finished lunch, he offered her a canvas tote from Deke’s for her clothes and brought her home.

She dropped her small purse into the tote. “No, that’s okay. Go back and write or whatever you need to do, I’ll handle the ladies.” Reaching for the door handle, she leaned over and dropped a quick kiss on his cheek. “I’ll check in after I go see Mom and Dad.”

His dark brows pinched together in a frown. “You’re handling it all, Tee. That hardly seems fair.”

“You’re an innocent victim in this, Bren. I’m the one who wants a baby, so I need to do the explaining.”

“I’m your husband in this, Tee. We’re partners.” His voice was rough.

She glanced up at the group on the porch. Megan, in the big wicker rocker had her arms crossed over her breasts, Holly sat on the step, her head leaning on the porch post, and Sam was perched on the porch rail gazing out toward the river. None of them had noticed the arrival of Bren’s Jeep or if they had, they were being circumspect enough not to rush them.

She patted his arm. “If they’d wanted to talk to both of us, your brothers would be here, too.” At his clear hesitation, she pushed the door open, struggling a bit with the old recalcitrant latch. “Didn’t you say you needed to write a report from your London trip?”

His shoulders sagged as he took his hand off the ignition key. “Okay. Text me.” He leaned into the passenger seat and grinned as she slipped out. “By the way, you look amazing in my clothes. I’m thinking we can clear out your closet and we’ll both wear my stuff from now on. Save some space. What do you think?”

It took everything she had not to hop back into the Jeep and tell him to take her back to the cabin. Somehow, time stopped there and the memory of Bren’s skilled touches sent a shiver of longing straight through her.
